Since 1992, PCC has been making efforts to aid the people in the Throggs Neck community, especially for those dealing with financial strife. The newest addition to the many programs offered by PCC are ESL classes. We first realized the need for such a program when trying to communicate with the parents of children enrolled in one or more programs at PCC. Research shows 73% of the people living in Throggs Neck Housing have a native language other than English.
This Program offers a free class room environment with 5 teachers and a class cap of 20 people. What makes this unique from other ESL Programs is that each student is only required to pay the cost of the book materials. The classes are offered at St. Frances de Chantal Church, located in their meeting room. Free parking is available.
The classes are 2 hours a day; Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 9:00am to 11:00 am. Currently, we offer 2 levels of instruction (beginner and intermediate).
Our Program is operated with the intent of teaching each student how to read, write, and speak in English, like the courses found in a high school such as Preston. However, the main goal is to help these parents to be able to communicate with their community and the school system.
